GEO vs AEO, inside Machine Relations

Generative engine optimization and answer engine optimization are not competing companies and they are not competing strategies. They are two names for practices that sit inside one discipline. I coined that discipline, Machine Relations, in 2024, because the narrower names were being asked to carry a job they do not cover.

GEO, in the glossary, is the work of being included in an answer a generative engine writes. AEO, in the glossary, is the work of being selected as a source by an answer engine. Read those sentences on the glossary pages. I am not replacing them. A founder who treats the two acronyms as rival markets will staff two teams to chase one retrieval. A founder who treats either acronym as the whole strategy will miss the part of the work that is still earned evidence: a source a human editor or a specialist publication was willing to put their name on.

The way I keep them apart is by the buyer's question, not by the vendor's pitch. A question about how to do something, a question about whether something is worth it, and a question that compares two options do not retrieve the same kinds of sources. GEO-shaped work and AEO-shaped work can both be honest responses to one of those questions. Neither is a response to all three. Machine Relations is the name I use when the job is the set: make the brand legible enough to be retrieved, credible enough to be cited, and specific enough that the citation says something a buyer can use.

This page does not rank the practices and it does not price them. Ranking and pricing are execution. The glossary owns the definitions. If you want the maintained sentences, use the two links below and stop at those sentences. If you want my placement of the two terms under the discipline, it is the paragraph above, and the origin essay is the account of why the wider name exists.

What I would decide, as a founder, is simple. Fund the practice that matches the question your buyer asks. Call that practice by its glossary name so the team knows which task they are in. Do not rename the discipline every time a new acronym arrives. The discipline stays Machine Relations. The practices can keep their names without being asked to be the whole thing.
